We went to Maldon with a side bolstered by some of the first team boys. Had their game gone ahead, this match would have been called off. Witham were open and honest about the situation and both sides just wanted the game to go ahead. We even offered a score reversal but Maldon declined this.
The hosts started strongly, holding possession and spending time in Witham territory. However, once Witham regained the ball, the play moved to Maldons 22. Cameron opened the scoring, breaking from the back of the scrum to force his way over the line. Vidler slotted the first of his 5 conversions for the day to give a 7-0 lead. A kick and chase caused panic in the Maldon back line and when the ball broke loose, Dan Quigley took advantage, pouncing on the loose ball to score. Midway through the half, Cameron once again broke through tackles for a fine solo try. But this was not going to be easy for Witham and some determined pressure finally gave Maldon the try they deserved to finish the half at 5-21.
The second half started well for Witham with Arran Stanier breaking the defence to score early on. He would have repeated the feat if he'd remembered how to ground the ball a few minutes later. But Maldon then mounted several attacks, breaking through twice, showing that they weren't to be taken lightly. Late on, Arran' s memory returned and he scored his second actual try of the day before Marley Valentine completed the scoring with a well taken and well deserved try. Final score 15-40.
