With Writtle and Witham both struggling to get a 2nd team out, the clubs agreed this game would go ahead no matter how many aside it had to be. As it turns out, Witham went with 13 and Writtle matched this so rugby could break out. Writtle had the edge throughout the game, able to get the ball wide and use the extra space for their runners. But Witham made sure it wasn't easy for them with some great tackles, awesome counter-rucking and even a few good chances. As you may have guessed, the 22-all draw is not strictly accurate but neither side were looking for league points, this was about making sure 2nd team players had a game. It was also a good learning curve. We learned that scrum half is not so easy. We learned that when yoyo finally got a pass away from the back of the scrum, Josh can make a hell of a dash down the wing, only being halted by a cosmetic emergency. We learned that Max can get to Writtle quicker than he gets to a ruck. We learned that backs can drive forwards back off a ruck but also learned that it tends to damage the backs involved. And we learned that boat races are more of a forwards thing.
Our thanks go to Writtle for their hospitality both on and off the field. #rugbywins
