Fair play to Writtle for the loan of a couple of players as Witham were short. The return of Darren Smith helped to stabilise the pack but some of the new players were also showing what they can do. Dave at full back and Mike on the wing are both looking more comfortable each week. Writtle opened the scoring after a bit of early pressure but Witham were immediately back at them. Our number 8 Angelo Comparini made the final lunge as the forwards harassed the Writtle line. But before the half was finished, the hosts had a 12-5 lead.
The second half was an untidy affair which the ref was not in control of. The Chesson brothers were dishing out handbags while Tiny was baiting the biggest guy on the field. In between high tackles and a cheeky fish hook, Writtle extended their lead. But Witham got it back together with a try from Ian Mellor. But the game ended with a score of 19-13 And several what ifs. What if the ref had allowed Lea Chesson's try? What if he'd managed the tackles better? What if Darren Smith ever critices a back for dropping a catch??
