From the kick off, Witham had some cold cobwebs to clear. A forward pass, a kick direct into touch and other handling errors saw us penned in our own half. When we finally got it togethet, the pack bossed the scrums and when the ball was released to the backs, quick hands gave Rich Ward the chance to score in the corner. From the restart, we were building momentum when a dropped pass allowed their fly half to steal the ball and escape. The conversion put the Steelers ahead and we knew we had to get going. Before long we were back on the attack. When we got a 5 meter scrum, the pack forced they way over for Lee Bywater to ground. For the remainder of the half, we exerted relentless pressure resulting in tries for Paul Cole and Steve Clements.
The scond half saw Marley Valentine on the scoresheet and we finally slotted a conversion. Then came Dave Hollick's curtain call. Fron 20 meters out he held off 2 defenders to score. Aaron decided that as I'd hit a conversion, so would he- with the help of the crossbar and tailwind lol. Steelers managed another try before Alex Beer managed to score a brace. Late on, i managed a breakaway but as my old legs tired, i thought I'd let Aaron finish it off but he needed the pitch to be about 2 meters wider as he allowed the full back to take him out. Rich Ward got his second try of the game to complete a fulfilling win. The Steelers were well organised and battle for every ball. Mr Hollick can head to NZ with memories of a really good game of rugby. Man of the match was...... Me (not my decision- honest)
