Burnham started with the wind behind them and took the game to Witham. Early exchanges saw the home side quicker to the breakdowns and in control. Burnham were soon attacking Witham's line and in spite of some stubborn defence they finally broke through to score. A few minutes later, Witham were under pressure again. By stealing a lineout Burnham caught our defence out of position and in spite of a determined last ditch tackle by Michel Vidler their man scored. Yoyo came on and stabilised the front row. Also Rich Miller switched to second row and suddenly we were competing at the scrums. This gave us more possession and our new man Pedro was directing things from scrum half. However, burnham had the momentum and managed to score again. Late in the half, we won a penalty. We decided to go for the points but Vidler forgot about the wind and it drifted wide. Burnham cleared there lines and managed to score as the half ended. Half time score was 28-0 but we knew we were as good as them. From the restart, we were on the attack. When they fumbled and Tappy piled through they panicked and kicked the ball behind their own line. From the 5 metre scrum Tappy picked and went. The huge maul that follwed edged over their line but as we took it down it was judged to be held up. Next scrum, Tappy and Pedroworked the blind side but again the ball could not be grounded. Next time Pedro passed to me. Although i got past the fly half the fullback prevented me reaching the line but the ball was recycled and we were once again over the line but the ref still couldn't see it grounded. Finally Pedro went to the blind side where Joe Wood was able to make it. Rich Miller converted and we were on the board. Burnham were getting desperate as we piled on the pressure. Each time they put hands the ruck or just lay on the ball, we ran the penalties as we wanted more than 3 points. The ref eventually went to his pocket but had obviously forgotten his cards so it stayed at 15 aside. Finally Tappy managed to break through and score. It was an easy conversion so i took it. We kept the pressure on but an unfortunate injury to a Burnham lad caused a long delay. Brian Ellis went on their side to keep the numbers even. But we got back on the attack. Before long we were close to their line. A quick penalty led to another penalty 5 meters out.Pedro carefully positioned the runners then dummied and launched himself over the line. Rich slotted the conversion (i let him even though it was easy). We had 7 minutes to try to recover the game but just could quite make it. Man of the match was Nathan Frost. Thrown in as prop he worked tirelessly thoughout. Pedro made a superb debut showing some sleek skills and great communication.
