Whilst the half time break signalled the start of a typically merit table frustration, the first half was an excellent display of rugby.
Pegasus spent a lot of time in attack and the Witham defence had to hold out and did so superbly. When Witham did get the ball, the breaks were devastating. Ryan Logue collected 2 tries from storming counter attacks, while Keith Willmott marked his long awaited return with the sort of bulldozing try-scoring run we love to see from him. Darryl Chesson was showing the reliability of his kicking and the pack was working hard to keep on terms against a heavier opposition. The 21 -5 lead that Witham had at half time was never going to be enough as Pegasus had come very close several times. On one occasion, their winger looked odds on to score until Ryan escorted him from the pitch a few feet short of the line. It was a bruising encounter and the second half should have been a great spectacle.
However, Pegasus managed to find a cluster of substitutes and suddenly their team looked totally different. The new set of backs were running their moves at pace and their forwards seemed to be moving a heck of a lot quicker too. Our boys put up a valiant effort but had played a hard 40 minutes already. Pegasus scored 39 unanswered points in the second half and no doubt wondered why all those chaps weren't on the pitch at the start of the game.........
