The visitors used their size advantage in the the scrum to progress before releasing their backs. However, Witham's stubborn defence didn't let them through for the first quarter of the game. Then a penalty five metres from the Witham line gave Brentwood the chance to drive through to open the scoring. Withams captain Steve Regan said the Old Brentwood forwards were formidable but the likes of Fijidan Kelly and Darren Smith kept driving at them. An excellent rolling maul gave the visitors another try as they started to open up a lead. By half time, with their kicker on form, they led 28-0.
Witham made a few changes at half time but we're still not managing to break through until a long kick by Lee Higham found some space. great chasing and a slick pick up by Rob Bennett should have given Witham a well deserved try but Old Brentwood's winger made a heroic last gasp tackle to deny him.
While Brentwood forwards enabled them to score a couple more tries, a series of penalties deep in their territory gave Witham hope. rather than take 3 points, they went for the elusive try but just never quite made it.
It was a great game played in good spirits and the Trinnovantes are looking forward to the return fixture next Saturday.
