Runwell used their big lumps relentlessly and it took some really gutsy tackling to keep them at bay. Eventually, they managed to use a series of pick and drives to get close to our line. With our defence split, the ball went to their left and an overlap gave them the lead.
Runwell imposed themselves and managed to build a lead with strong runners. But late in the first half, Witham had a spell of possession. Aaron Coombs made a break before passing to Dave Hollick who was stopped just short. Chris Jarman was in support and allowed Matt Mirecki to collect. Matt stepped inside the defence and scored neatly. Witham were on the attack again but the half time whistle prevented a further score. With Runwell holding a lead of 26-5, Witham knew a win was unlikely but set about reducing the deficit. Some attacking drives by Steve Regan and Darren Smith took Witham close with Ryan Logue bustling through to score his 6th try of the season (He'll claim its more than that don't be greedy). Daz Chesson converted. Towards the end of the match, Joe Cook collected the ball on Witham's own line and counter attacked. As he crossed the halfway line, he found Russell Emerson who continued the attack. Runwell defence thought they had stopped the threat but Darryl Chesson found a gap to sneak through and score. He converted and has managed an impressive 63 points for the Mighty Seconds since his debut in January.
It was a great day out but one question remains: After an hour of rugby on a hot day, who the hell wants a cup of SOUP?
While it's a shame not to take the silverware, the performance ensured our first season was one to be incredibly proud of.
