The wind was always going to be a factor and Writtle chose to have it behind their backs for the first half. An early 50-22 kick put the home side on the attack but Witham's defence was ferocious, pushing Writtle back time after time. With the wind negating the kicking options, the visitors had to use relentless pod work to march into the Writtle half. A few attempts to release the backs were thwarted so the forwards went back into action, hitting the defence strongly until eventually Jack was able to reach the line and open the scoring. The rest of the half saw similar patterns with long kicks sending Witham back to work the ball up the field again. Half time arrived with Witham leading 0 -5.
The second half started with Writtle once again the early attackers. Having held them out for 10 mins, Witham were able to break free. Once play had got to mid field, Witham were awarded a penalty. Using the wind, Jimmy slotted the kick perfectly, giving Witham an important 8 point lead.
Writtle we're throwing everything at Witham to try to get back into the game but the visitors aggressive defence was keeping them at bay. Late in the game, Witham conceded a penalty deep in Writtle's half. With the wind against, Writtle tried to run it but Witham turned the ball over and attacked the line with Arran finally crossing to score. With Jimmy slotting the conversion, there was now a more comfortable lead. Writtle were determined to get on the scoreboard with relentless attacking runs. However Witham matched it with relentless defence.
The final score of 0-15 was a reward for Witham's determination. Both sides deserved praise for a tough game, played in tricky conditions. Man of the Match was Josh Twin.
